“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

– Marie Curie (1867 – 1934)

Intent

Through high quality teaching of science at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, we aim to give our children the scientific skills, knowledge and understanding to develop their natural curiosity about how the world around them works.

It is our collective vision for children to see themselves as scientists, become independent thinkers and to promote a life-long love of science, with an enquiry approach at its heart. When children leave our school, they will know more, remember more and have a deeper understanding of the scientific world. They will be able to think, write and communicate like a scientist.

Implementation

From a young age, children are encouraged to ask questions, plan carefully and carry out investigations. They will learn how to observe, measure, classify, record and explain their findings. Through first-hand, practical experiences, using these investigative skills, children will be equipped to develop a further understanding of our world. They are encouraged to ask questions and learn from their mistakes in order to become a more confident and independent learner. High-quality resources and use of the local environment further enhance pupils’ learning in this subject area.

Use of accurate scientific terminology is promoted all the way through school to support a clear understanding of scientific concepts.

The science curriculum has been developed in a clear and succinct way to ensure there is progression in key skills and knowledge, which can be transferred into KS3, as children move from primary school. Each unit of work has a clear rationale, key scientific vocabulary and will build on pupils’ prior knowledge. Learning will be purposeful, and children will learn about many different scientists in order to understand how science has changed over the years and the implications this will have for our future.
