We would like to welcome you to the Year 1 class page. We are looking forward to working co-operatively with you to support the development of your children throughout the year.
In Year 1 we strive to create a smooth transition from Reception into Year 1. We do this by continuing to provide a variety of learning experiences to promote understanding which children are familiar with from their time in Reception. We also begin to create a more structured approach to learning and developing independence.
Maths
The children will extend their knowledge of number and place value up to 100. We will be counting forwards and backwards from different starting points in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. We will be reinforcing correct number formation. We will improve their understanding of addition and subtraction with a particular focus on number bonds up to 20. We will also further our understanding of 2D and 3D shapes and measurement. We will introduce the children to simple, practical multiplication and division and learn about halves and quarters.
Homework
Children are expected to read every day to an adult and a comment is needed to be written in their reading record at least three times per week.
Homework will include; weekly spellings to be tested on a Friday and a homework task linked to our maths or topic work.
PE
PE will be on a Thursday. Children need to come wearing their PE kit. PE kit can be a plain red T-shirt or school PE top and black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms.
