This week, families at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Hartlepool enjoyed a wonderful Stay and Play session focused on celebrating and supporting early reading. The session was led by Pam Readman, Assistant Hub Co‑ordinator from the local library, who brought her expertise, enthusiasm and passion for children’s literacy to our school community.
Supporting Early Reading From the Start
During the session, Pam spoke to families about the importance of introducing books from a young age and the positive impact early reading has on language development, imagination, confidence and a lifelong love of stories. Parents and carers were able to explore simple, enjoyable ways to share books at home, helping to build strong reading habits right from the start.
Every Child Receives a Bookstart Pack
A highlight of the morning was the excitement of receiving a Bookstart pack to take home. Each pack included beautiful books and fun activities designed to help families enjoy reading together. These resources offer a wonderful opportunity for children to continue exploring stories and building early literacy skills beyond the classroom.
Learning About Local Library Services
Pam also shared valuable information about the library service and the fantastic sessions available at The Hubs, encouraging families to make the most of local community resources. From story times and rhyme sessions to family activities, our local library plays an important role in supporting reading for pleasure.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Pam Readman for supporting our school and helping us inspire the next generation of readers. Her guidance and the resources provided will make a lasting difference to our children’s reading journeys.
